McKenzie finished with a career-high 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team opened ACC play at home against Virginia Tech and fell, 21-14, on a rainy and windy afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Mason McKenzie had a career day on the ground, finishing with a career-high 138 yards on 26 attempts with two touchdowns. He also went 11-for-24 in the air with 111 yards. KP Price finished with a game-high 10 tackles while five other defenders finished with seven tackles each.
Neither team was able to generate a drive more than 40 yards until the Hokies put together a 48-yard drive late in the second quarter that resulted in a 45-yard field goal from John Love to give Virginia Tech a 3-0 lead with 16 seconds to go until halftime.
After an early third quarter field goal by the Hokies made it a 6-0 game, the Eagles scored their first touchdown of the afternoon on the next drive to take a 7-6 lead. The five-play, 75-yard drive was highlighted by a 45-yard rush by McKenzie to set up a five-yard rushing touchdown on the next play for the junior from Michigan.
On the next Virginia Tech possession, Max Tucker punched out the ball from the Hokies' ball carrier and returned it 20 yards to set Boston College up at the Virginia Tech 22. The Eagles went three-and-out and were forced to punt. The defense responded, stuffing the Hokies on fourth and four to cause a turnover on downs.
The Boston College offense responded with a nine-play, 67-yard drive capped off by a two-yard keeper from McKenzie. McKenzie put the Eagles on the two-yard line after a 20-yard completion to Dawson Pough.Â
Virginia Tech evened the game at 14 with eight minutes left when they found the back of the end zone with a 14-yard touchdown pass and converted the ensuing two-point try. After a six-play drive, the Eagles punted, giving the Hokies the ball at their own 24. Virginia Tech took the ball 76 yards in one play to the lead for good with just under five minutes to go.Â
Boston College had one more possession before the Hokies ran out the clock and ended the game.Â
The Eagles hit the road for the first time since opening weekend, traveling to Texas for an ACC matchup against SMU on Saturday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. CT and will stream live on The CW.
