Eagles Take Down UAlbany in Five Sets

BC Soars Through Invitational Undefeated
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (9-0, 0-0 ACC) defeated UAlbany (5-4, 0-0 AEC) 3-2 in a five set thriller, closing their first tournament to remain undefeated. The Eagles won by scores of 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25 and 16-14.
Anna Herrington outdid her career high from yesterday recording a new career-high of 17 kills. She added four blocks and 19 points. Sam Hoppes had an intense game tonight posting a new career high with 13 kills. She boasted a .650% over 20 attempts and added four blocks and 15 points. Junior Audrey Ross tallied 11 kills and over 13 points. Cornelia Roach added six kills and five blocks, recording eight points for the Eagles. Both Brooklyn Yelland and Aubrey Moore held the back row down with a combined 31 digs. Aubrey Moore also added 25 digs, earning her first double-double of the season. Juniors Audrey Ross and Brooklyn Yelland both recorded a pair of aces, freshman Bella Ehrlich 1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: The Great Danes earned the first point of the afternoon to get on the board first. The Eagles responded quickly with a kill from Cornelia Roach to open up scoring. Kills from Sequoia Layne and Anna Herrington shortened the gap accompanied by an ace from Bella Ehrlich. Audrey Ross and Sam Hoppes added two kills each but it wasn't enough to catch up to the Great Danes. UAlbany took the first set 25-17.
Set 2: Building off of momentum gained from the first, the Great Danes opened scoring. A huge kill from Danica Rach got the Eagles up, evening the score. Kills from Herrington and Hoppes assisted the effort, shortening the difference. With a pair of back-to-back kills from Hoppes, the score evened once more. Kills from Layne and Herrington (2) accompanied by two service aces from Ross put BC in the lead. The score evened three more times but with kills from Hoppes, Ross, Herrington (2) and a final kill from Ehrlich, the Eagles took the set 25-23.
Set 3: The Great Danes opened up scoring once again but the Eagles were quick to respond. Kills from Roach kept BC up and a big kill from Herrington put them in the lead. Maintaining their lead, kills from Layne and Hoppes lengthened the gap with two huge BC blocks; Hoppes and Roach and Herrington and Roach. The Herrington Roach duo was on fire tonight posting back-to-back kills for the Eagles. Back-to-back-to-back kills from Herrington, Roach and Ross forced a UAlbany timeout. One kill from Herrington and two back-to-back kills from Ross solidified the set; the Eagles took the third 25-18.
Set 4: UAlbany opened up the scoring but Roach responded quickly with a kill. A huge kill from Ross put the Eagles in the lead and a big block from Ehrlich and Herrington assisted the effort. Big kills from Ehrlich, Herrington and Hoppes (2) kept BC up until UAlbany took the lead for only a few points. Kills from Roach, Herrington Ross and Hoppes (2) evened the score. The Great Danes took the fourth set 25-19.
Set 5: Starting the fifth set strong, the Eagles got on the board first and grew their lead with a 5-0 run featuring kills from Herrington (2) and Ross. Kills from Ross and Hoppes extended the lead to 6, and with a big block from Ehrlich and Layne, UAlbany took a timeout. Back-to-back blocks from duos of Ehrlich/Hoppes and Hoppes/Roach accompanied by a kill from Layne pushed the Eagles to 13. One final big kill by Herrington came in clutch to push the Eagles to a victory. BC took the final set 16-14.

The Eagles remain at home as they are set to host Bryant, Harvard and Stonehill the Eagle Classic Sept. 18-20. BC competes against Harvard Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 p.m.; Stonehill Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. and Bryant Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
