Eagles Defeat No. 14 Virginia Tech for First ACC Win

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Boston College men's soccer defeated No. 14 Virginia Tech by a score of 1-0 in ACC action on Sunday evening at Thompson Field. Jack Burkhardt scored his first career goal, while Andrej Borak made six saves to earn his third shutout of the season.

BC improves to 4-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the ACC while Virginia Tech drops to 2-1-3 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.

Boston College took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Burkhardt scored from the penalty spot in the 39th minute. Johannes Hanken Tjostheim was taken down in the box and after video review by the referee, the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick.

Virginia Tech was awarded a penalty kick of their own in the 86th minute, but Alex Perez's shot went wide right.

The Eagles started off strong, earning the first shot on goal from either side. Dylan Mafong ran down the left wing and whipped in a cross back towards the top of the box. Nikolai Rojel headed the ball outside the box to Russell Brown, who controlled it and hit a powerful left-footed effort that forced Virginia Tech goalkeeper Sam Joseph to make the save.

Virginia Tech had their first chance of the night a few minutes later, but Borak made the stop with a diving effort to force it wide. Borak made another key stop just before halftime when he produced another diving effort, this time was nearly caught wrong-footed but was able to stretch to make a one-handed save.

Boston College kept its foot on the gas in the second half to add to the lead. Marci Killeen nearly doubled its lead in the 70th minute with a shot towards an open goal but his shot was blocked by a Virginia Tech defender.

Tonight's win marks the first time the Eagles won their first road ACC game of the season since 2013, a 2-1 win at Pitt.

BC returns to the Newton Soccer Field on Friday evening for an ACC tilt against No. 5 NC State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
