No. 16 WXC Ready to Kick Off 2012 Season
The 2012 women’s cross country season gets underway Saturday as the 16th ranked Eagles will open their season at the Bryant Invitational. BC finished the 2011 season strong with a final ranking of 11th in the USTFCCCA poll after a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships last fall, their best national ranking since 2001. The Eagles are the highest ranked ACC team in the preseason poll behind 4th ranked Florida State whom received one first place vote.
“The freshman group of six are having a really good start to their college careers and introduction to this level of training,” said assistant coach Julie Heyde. “We are looking forward to watching them progress as students and athletes. They are already making a positive impact on our program.”
“We have an excellent core group of experienced upperclassmen who are returning this year. They will be the leaders of the team. Many of these returners ran in the ACCs, Regionals, and NCAAs last year,” said Heyde. “The team will be looking to a lot of the sophomores and juniors to have strong seasons this fall, both in training and racing, to help the group improve and get faster together as the season goes on. Overall, we are happy with how everything has been going this past week of pre-season training and we are really excited about the season getting underway.”
Due to the renovations at Franklin Park this year, there will be no home meets for the Eagles. They will compete close to home for the first three meets as they travel to Bryant (Sept. 9), UMass (Sept. 15), and the New England Championships in Westfield (Oct. 7). BC will then travel to Madison, Wisc for the Wisconsin Invitational (Oct. 12) before returning to New England for the Rothenberg Race in East Greenwich, R.I. (Oct. 19). The team will finish out the season at the ACC Championships in Blacksburg, Va. (Oct. 27), the NCAA Northeast Regional in Madison, Conn. (Nov. 11), and the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky. (Nov. 17).
