Oct. 15, 2012
Volleyball's Katty Workman has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week (for the week of Oct. 8-14) for the third time this season, as announced by the conference office.
Workman's selection marks the first time in program history that a player has won three weekly conference honors in the same season.
Against the top two teams in the ACC standings - No. 12 Florida State and Miami - this past weekend, the Thousand Oaks, Calif. native led BC with 35 total kills and 4.38 kills per set while also notching 3.50 digs per set.
In BC's 3-0 loss to Florida State on Friday, Workman led all players with 17 kills to go with nine digs for her 11th match this season with double-digit kills. The 6-0 outside hitter followed up that performance with 18 kills and a career-high 19 digs for her ninth double-double of the year in BC's 3-2 five-set loss to Miami on Sunday. Against the Hurricanes, Workman tallied seven kills on .462 hitting in BC's 25-11 fourth set win.
On the season, the La Reina High School product currently leads the ACC with 4.24 kills per set and also leads the league in that category in conference matches with 4.65 k/s in ACC play. A former player for Sports Shack volleyball club, Workman has posted double-digit kills in 19 of 21 matches on the year including in each of her last 12 contests and in all nine ACC matches she has played in.
Nationally, Workman ranks 29th in the NCAA in kills per set and holds the third highest kills per set average of any freshman in the country, trailing only Macey Gardner (4.74 k/s, fifth nationally) of Arizona State and Melissa Rigo (4.30 k/s, 24th nationally) of Stony Brook.
Workman and the Eagles are back in action this weekend with road matches at NC State (Oct. 19, 7:00 p.m.) and at North Carolina (Oct. 20, 5:00 p.m.).
