Volleyball Goes Undefeated in the BC Invitational

Boston College volleyball (5-2) picked up a 3-1, four-set victory over Hampton University (4-2) in its final game of the Boston College Invitational. The Eagles won the tournament, going undefeated in all three matches played.

Sophomore Katty Workman recorded a match high of 22 kills on .385 hitting. Teammate Kellie Barnum also had a strong all-around game notching a match high of 51 assists.

Boston College stole the first set, defeating Hampton, 25-22. Junior outside hitter Courtney Castle recorded two kills to go with four digs in set one. Katty Workman posted four kills and two digs while team captain Kellie Barnum paced the squad with three kills, two digs, and a set-high 12 assists. Other notable contributors in the first set included newcomers Amanda Yerke and Anna Skold, who both chipped in three kills and Madisen Lydon who registered five digs.

BC dropped the second set to the Lady Pirates 29-27. Workman notched eight kills and a dig while Courtney Castle added five kills and a dig of her own in the set. Barnum again led the squad in assists in the second set with a total of 25.

In the third set Boston College took a two-sets-to-one lead with a 25-17 victory. Sophomore Sarah Mendes emerged as a leader in the third set contributing two kills, two service aces, and two digs. Anna Skold and Amanda Yerke both recorded two kills while Workman posted three kills and an assist. Barnum once again prevailed as the assist leader with eight for the set.

The Eagles took the fourth set, 25-21 giving them a 3-1 victory over the Lady Pirates in the match. Workman posted seven kills while Mendes had another strong set contributing four kills and three digs. Senior Melissa McTighe recorded two kills in the set respectively.

Captain Kellie Barnum and Melissa McTighe were named to the BC Invitational All-Tournament team, while sophomore Katty Workman took home the title of tournament MVP.

The Eagles are on the road next weekend as they travel to the Columbia Invitational in New York City Sept. 13 & 14.
