The Boston College volleyball team begins its season on the road Labor Day weekend competing in the Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee, N.C., on Aug. 30 and 31. For the first time in school history, BC will square off against South Carolina-Upstate, Wright State, UNC-Asheville and tournament host Western Carolina.

The tournament is comprised of nine games over the two-day span with five different conferences represented; The Atlantic Coast Conference (BC), the Southern Conference (Western Carolina), the Big South Conference (UNC-Asheville), the Atlantic Sun Conference (USC-Upstate), and the Horizon League (Wright State). The invitational will mark the beginning of the 2013 season for all teams participating.

While in Cullowhee, the Eagles will play the second game of the tournament on Friday with a matchup against USC-Upstate and conclude the day against Western Carolina. On Saturday, Boston College will begin the day facing Wright State at 10 a.m. followed by UNC-Asheville at 2:30 p.m.

Chris Campbell enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Boston College volleyball team with expectations of steady improvement. With 10 letterwinners and five starters returning, as well as an influx of young talent, the Eagles will look to better their record of 10-22 (4-16 ACC) from last season.

Junior setter Kellie Barnum, who ranks seventh on BC's all-time assists list with 1,431, returns as captain for her second season. Another notable returner is sophomore outside hitter Katty Workman, who was just recently named to the 2013 Preseason All-ACC team. Junior outside hitter Courtney Castle and senior middle hitter Melissa McTighe, who were the only two players to play in all 114 sets in 2012, also return.
