Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Middle hitter Krystle Higgins and setter Kellie Barnum have been elected captains for the 2012 season according to an announcement made by head coach Chris Campbell on Monday, May 7.
"I think our team made two great choices for their 2012 captains in Krystle and Kellie," Campbell said. "They are both hard workers, talented players, and have earned the respect of their teammates and coaching staff. Having strong voices on the court and in the locker room is an essential ingredient for success. Both of these players understand the effort, dedication, and commitment required for compete in the ACC."
Higgins becomes the seventh Eagles to serve as captain over multiple seasons. She joins Jennifer McEnroe (1990-91), Jeannette Gaehwiler (1993-94), Deanna Herman (1995-96), Julia Gallacher (1996-97), Kyleen Charlton (1999-2000) and Dani Moskitis (2008, 10) as two-time captains. All-American outside hitter Allison Anderson (2004-06) and setter Verena Rost (2003-05) captained the Eagles for three years at The Heights.
Barnum is just the sixth sophomore in program history to be elected a captain by her teammates. Anderson, Rost, Moskitis, Emily Stegner and Mollie Kolosky led Boston College in their second year.
Higgins led Boston College with a .255 attack percentage and 0.89 blocks per set, while amassing the second most points on the team (275) in 2011. The rising-senior was ranks sixth in career blocks at BC (252) and fifth in career block assists (209). Higgins registered seven matches with five or more blocks and 11 with hitting percentage of .300 or greater.
As a freshman, Barnum ranked 10th in the ACC with 7.86 assists per set. The Pacific Palisades, Calif. product posted 30 or more assists in 11 matches and recorded the third most assists (684) by an Eagles rookie. Barnum became Boston College's first ACC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3, 2011 after leading the Maroon and Gold in sweep of conference play.
