Volleyball Defeats Binghamton in Straight Sets, 3-0

Boston College (1-0) volleyball won its home opener over the Binghamton Bearcats (0-1) in straight sets, 3-0, winning 28-26, 25-18, and 25-14.

Freshman Katty Workman paced the squad with a match-high 15 kills and a match-high .345 hitting percentage while sophomore Courtney Castle followed closely with 13 kills.

Junior Cagla Sen led the Eagles with 26 assists while sophomore libero Lauren Fields recorded a match-high 18 digs. Junior Melissa McTighe also contributed with five kills and a hitting percentage of .333.

For Binghamton, senior Alex Roland had a team-high eight kills, sophomore Amanda Dettmann recorded 26 assists, and junior libero Xiomara Ortiz registered a team-high 15 digs.

With the win, BC improved its all-time record against Binghamton to 1-1 and won its season-opener for the first time since 2008.

The Eagles took a closely contested first set victory over the Bearcats, 28-26. In the set, Workman and Castle each notched five kills. Sen registered 13 assists while Fields came up with eight digs.

BC began to take control of the match in a 25-18 second set victory. The Eagles received a well-rounded contribution on the attack with Castle, Workman, and Sen all recording four kills and McTighe adding three kills of her own. On the defensive side, Fields notched four digs while Castle and Sen chipped in with three digs apiece.

BC earned the match victory with a 25-14 win in the third set as Workman had six kills and Castle followed with four kills. Sophomore captain Kellie Barnum came in to provide a set-high eight assists.

Boston College takes the court at Power Gym again at approximately 7:00 p.m. tonight in a match against the Siena Saints.
