Women's Track & Field Wins Second Battle of Beantown Title

    CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's track and field team won its second Battle of Beantown Championship on Saturday at Harvard's Gordon Track and Tennis Center. The Eagles have won the event two years in a row.

    Boston College finished ahead of Harvard in the team standings. The Eagles accumulated 143 points while the Crimson finished with 132. Northeastern finished third while Boston University took fourth.

    Freshman Anna Cioffredi won the 400m dash with a time of 57.76 while junior Meaghan Callahan finished right behind her coming in at 58.00 flat.

    Junior Caitlyn Bailey won the 500m for the second time in as many years at the event with a time of 1:13.71, which was better than last year's mark she set. Sophomore Siobhan Breagy (1:16.81) and senior Alicia Henry (1:17.29) also scored in the event, finishing third and fourth, respectively.

    Graduate student Mary Heitkamp (2:09.15), junior Samantha Gawrych (2:10.70), and freshman Heather Garcia (2:18.38) each placed in the top five in the 800m run, placing second, third, and fourth respectively.

    Three women also finished in scoring position in the 1000m as sophomore Madeline Wallace (fourth, 2:54.51), freshman Kaitlyn Cooney (fifth, 2:55.36), and junior Gretchen Andrus (sixth, 2:56.31) all placed in the top six.

     

     

    Senior Mallory Champa was just .08 seconds off of a win in the mile run with a time of 4:50.38. Graduate student Nikki Tufts (4:56.94) and junior Lauren Johnston (4:59.32) finished fourth and sixth, respectively.

    Champa also finished second in the 3000m with a time of 9:56.24 while Tufts placed fourth in the event at 10:04.88.

    Freshman Georgette Asfoura took third in the high jump with a leap of 1.60m and junior Caitlin McCann finished fifth at 1.50m. Freshman Emily Cornelius cleared 3.35m in the pole vault to place third. Junior Melissa Hadfield finished fifth in the long jump.

    Freshman Kelsey Huckins took second in both the shot put (12.68m) and the weight throw (15.51m) while senior Christie Matjuk placed fourth in the weight throw at 12.88m.

    The BC relay teams performed well as the 4x800m relay team took first while the 4x400m team placed second.

    BC will compete in the BU Valentine Invitational next Saturday held at the Track and Tennis Center.
