Cary, N.C. - The eighth-seed Boston College women's tennis team lost, 4-3, to ninth-seed NC State in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Cary Tennis Park on Thursday morning. The Eagles (10-13) and Wolfpack (9-15) battled to the final set.
NC State took the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Chloe Smith and Elisha Handle defeated junior Ina Kauppila and freshman Sarah Dalton, 8-4, on the third court. Senior Erina Kikuchi and freshman Jessica Wacnik fell to Ashley Miller and Joelle Kissell, also by a score of 8-4, on court one to secure the Wolfpack point. Nicole Martinez and Tantiana Illova led senior Katarina Gajic and Olga Khymlev, 5-4, when the Pack sealed the win.
Martinez gave NC State a 2-0 lead by defeating Kauppila, 6-1, 6-3, on court six in the first singles match finish. The Eagles battled back, as Gajic beat Miller, 7-6 (3), 6-3, on court three to make it 2-1. In the No. 4 position, Smith beat Khmylev in three sets - 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 - to give the Wolfpack a 3-1 advantage, but the Eagles evened the match with two wins. Wacnik beat Illova on court two, 7-6 (7), 6-3, and junior Kelly Barry took down Christy Sipes, rallying after falling in the first set, (4-6, 6-2, 6-1).
The match came down to the No. 1 single point between Kikuchi and Kissell. Earlier this season, Kikuchi defeated Kissell for her first win over a ranked opponent, but she did not have the same outcome the second time around. In a close, three-set match, Kissell came back to earn the win and the victory to advance her team, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-0.
The Eagles must await to see if they earn a bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 17.
