Women's Tennis Loses Close Battle to Syracuse

Weymouth, Mass. - The No. 55 Boston College women's tennis team fell to Syracuse, 4-3, in a close match on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles (4-3) earned all three doubles victories, but lost four of the six singles matches to the Orange (4-3).

The 32nd-ranked pair of freshman Jessica Wacnik and senior Erina Kikuchi tallied an 8-2 victory in the No. 1 doubles spot over Emily Harman and Komal Safdar, while juniors Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev, ranked 11th nationally, beat Maddie Kobelt and Aleah Marrow by the same score on court two. Junior Ina Kauppila and senior Katarina Gajic finished out sweep with an 8-3 victory on court three over Breanna Bachini and Amanda Rodgers.

Kikuchi and Khmylev earned the two BC wins in singles action, in the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Kikuchi defeated Kobelt, 6-1, 6-2, and Khmylev defeated Safdar in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(8). Wacnik, ranked 108th in the nation, fell to Harman in a tight-fought battle, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4, on court one. Gajic lost to Bachini, 6-1, 6-3, on court four, while junior Kelly Barry lost on court five and freshman Sarah Dalton fell on court six.

The Eagles return to the court for the three-day ECAC Indoor Championships starting on Friday, Feb. 17 hosted by Yale University.
