Women's Tennis Defeats Boston University, 5-2
Feb. 10, 2014
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Boston College women's tennis team improved to 5-0 this weekend with a 5-2 victory over cross-town rival Boston University on Sunday night at the Dedham Health and Fitness Club.
The Eagles got off to a good start, taking the doubles point. This is the fourth time in five matches this season that BC has won the point. BC's No. 1 team of Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr won their match, 6-0. The Eagles dropped the No. 2 doubles match but BC's No. 3 team of Katya Vasilyev and Emily Safron won the deciding match, 7-6(6).
"Katya and Emily are great competitors. They were able to stay in the moment and not let the excitement surrounding their match affect them,” said head coach Nigel Bentley. “They played very well together in crunch time. Lexi and Jess are also working really well together."
In singles play, the Eagles built a 3-0 lead when Wacnik defeated BU’s Johanna Hyoty at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 7-5. Sophomore Jenny Ren came back to take her match at the No. 4 spot, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(2). BU closed the gap winning at No. 3 in a super breaker, but BC was able to secure the win when Heini Salomen won at the No. 5 spot, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0(8).
“There were a lot of close matches on Sunday,” said Bentley. “BU brought its best tennis against us as they always do. I am really proud of how our team followed the steps needed to ensure a win. We fought hard and we were able to keep our focus and maintain our composure in the close matches. It was great to see Heini and Jenny both battle back after losing their first sets to get wins and I thought Jess did an outstanding job closing out her match."
Next up for the Eagles is a dual match at Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 15. The match is scheduled to be played at 2:30 p.m.
