Jan. 26, 2014

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Boston College women's tennis team improved to 2-0 with an exciting 5-2 win over regional rival Dartmouth on Saturday night at the Dedham Health and Fitness Club.  BC started strong by taking the doubles point.  Katya Vasilyev and Wan Yi Sweeting looked very sharp winning 6-2.  Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr, the region's No. 3 ranked team, playing in the No. 1 position sealed the point with a solid 6-4 win.  BC's No. 2 team of Heini Salomen and Jenny Ren for the second night in a row were leading when the point was decided.

"I thought we played with good energy and focus," said assistant coach Kieran Burke.  "We have been working really hard and we were a fired up group tonight right from the beginning.  We got off to quick starts in doubles and with the ITA experimental scoring format this is very important."

In singles play, BC extended its lead when Lexi Borr won at No. 2 singles.

"Lexi played with poise and confidence in closing out a tough match," said Burke.  "For the second night in a row freshman Emily Safron won the clinching match at No. 6 with an impressive 6-4 ,6-3 victory.

"Emily is a fighter and such a great competitor," said Burke.  "She looked confident and strong. We have two great freshmen."

The Eagles also won at No. 4 and No. 5 with sophomores Katya Vasilyev and Heini Salomen.

"Katya is off to a super start to the season." said Burke.  "Heini is so explosive and fun to watch."

After the match head coach Nigel Bentley said, "Dartmouth is a very good team.  They are very talented and well coached.  They are one of the top teams in our region and this was an important win for us.  I thought we played well in all three doubles matches and this set the tone for the night.  It feels great to start the season 2-0.  I think we are all excited for a hard week of practice."
