Jan. 20, 2013
Boston College won its spring season opener 5-2 over Dartmouth at the Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, N.H., on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (1-0) won 4-2 in singles and swept their three doubles matches versus the Big Green (0-1).
"It was exciting to get the season started with a win against a good Dartmouth team that is very well coached," head coach Nigel Bentley said. "We played well, and it was encouraging to see our freshmen step up with convincing wins."
Three of BC's freshmen - Katya Vasilyev, Heini Salonen, and Julia Casselbury - won in singles play while classmate Wan-Yi Sweeting, a mid-year enrollee, won in doubles with senior co-captain Ina Kauppila.
"We have lots to work on, but I thought we answered the challenge when Jessica, our top player, had to retire with an injury early in her singles match," Bentley said. "We are looking forward to a good week of practice and preparing for Syracuse next Friday in our home opener."
Boston College returns to the court in its home opener against Syracuse on Friday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. at the Dedham Health & Athletic Club.
