Swimming & Diving Teams Compete at Harvard Invitational
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Several members of the Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams had impressive performances at the Harvard Invitational this past weekend. There was no team scoring at the meet, which comprised six teams (BC, Harvard, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Central Connecticut, and Yale).
On the men's side, two Eagles had first-place finishes. Senior tri-captain Stephen Yap (Norwalk, Conn.) won the 50 freestyle (21.50) and freshman Ken Barton (Meriden, Conn.) captured the 200 breaststroke (2:11.18).
Other top individual performances included three third-place finishes. Freshman Robert Foley (Scituate, Mass.) finished third in the 500 freestyle (4:50.99). Junior Mike Walsh (Edina, Minn.) added a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly (52.23) and freshman Paul Callahan (Churchville, Pa.) placed third in the 200 backstroke (2:02.73).
The men's 200 medley relay team of Yap, Barton, Walsh and senior tri-captain Travor Boehm (Wilton, Conn.) placed second with a time of 1:36.06.
In the women's competition, junior freestyler Sara Guerena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) captured second in the 500 (5:07.63), while freshman Erica Allen (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.15.
The Eagles' 200 medley relay unit of sophomore Kendra Johnson (Weston, Conn.), senior Michelle Welch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), junior Patty Schoenhaus (Edison, N.J.) and senior Abby Gustafson (Ojai, Calif.) finished third with a time of 1:53.42.
The Eagle women excelled in the diving events. Freshman Kristen Gray (Worcester, Mass.) placed second in the one-meter competition, totalling 484.70 points, while classmate Shannon Lents (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished fourth (475.95 points).
