B.C. Women's Swimming & Diving Opens Season With Victory over UMass-Amherst
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -The Boston College women's swimming & diving team, under the direction of head coach Tom Groden (26th season) opened up the 1997-98 season in fine fashion defeating UMass-Amherst, 204-96, at the Flynn Recreation Complex on October 25. The Eagles captured first-place in 13 of 16 events.
Junior butterflier Allyson Horgan (Haverhill, Mass.) had an impressive day, winning two individual events (100 & 200 butterfly) and was a member of the victorious 200 medley relay squad. Horgan's 58.62 time in the 100 butterfly was the fastest for a BC swimmer in that event since the 1995-96 season.
Freshman diver Kristen Gray (Worcester, Mass.) had a memorable collegiate debut, accumulating 259.50 points in the one-meter diving event. Junior Sara Guerena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) won the 100 and 1,000 freestyle events, while the 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Guerena, junior Patty Schoenhaus (Edison, N.J.), Kendra Johnson (Weston, Conn.), and junior Rachel Enos (Ispwich, Mass.), captured first-place.
The Eagles will host BIG EAST rival West Virginia on Friday, October 31 at 6 p.m.
