Swimming Sweeps Weekend Meets

The Boston College swimming and diving teams had a successful weekend in Upstate New York, as both the men's and women's squads turned in victories on Jan. 13-14. The BC men's team downed Canisius, 162-138, on Friday, before defeating Niagara, 196-103, on Saturday, while the women beat Canisius by a score of 184-113, as well as Niagara, 198-96.
The BC men collected eight first-place finishes on the way to victory against Canisius. Marty Long won both the One-Meter (276.30) and Three-Meter (284.18) diving events for the Eagles. Collin Thilo won the 50-Yard Freestyle with a sprint time of 22.24, and took second in the 100-Yard Freestyle (48.00), behind teammate Eddie Timmerman (47.88). Connor Stickney and Sean Murphy also turned in first-place finishes BC in the 200-Yard Backstroke and 200-Yard Breaststroke, respectively. Nick Henze, James Karle and Joe Costa swept the top three times in the 200-Yard Freestyle, while the BC `A' relay team won the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.
The women also won eight events at Canisius. Dana Hadra took first in the One-Meter Dive (247.20) and second in the Three-Meter, behind teammate Erin Rademaker (237.07). In the 100-Yard Backstroke, Alyssa Niebrugge placed first with a time of 1:02.75, while Katie Chin earned the top-spot in the 200-Yard Butterfly (2:12.17). Stephanie Ng and Patty Kautz won the 200-Yard Backstroke and 200-Yard Freestyle, respectively. Lastly, BC took home the top-three finishes in the 500-Yard Freestyle in the form of Caitlin Maloy, Kelly McGrath and Christine McGuire, in addition to the top spot in the 400-Yard Medley Relay.
The following day, both BC squads continued their momentum, as the men and women earned 11 first-place finishes each in a win over Niagara. For the men, Thilo and Henze led the squad with two victories apiece. Thilo took first in the 50- and 100-Yard Freestyle, while Henze won the 200- and 500-Yard Free. Other winners for the Eagles included Stickney (100-Yard Back, 54.68), Murphy (200-Yard IM, 2:01.90), Michael Stephens (100-Yard Breast, 1:01.31), Zach Bowen (200-Yard Fly, 1:59.88) and Alex Rudolph (200-Yard Breast, 2:16.84).
On the women's side, Kathryn Raplee took first in the longest event of the meet, the 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 11.06.68. Ng won both the 500-Yard Free and the 100-Yard Back, while Chin placed first in the 200-Yard Fly and the 200-Yard IM. Other first-place finishers for the Eagles included Kautz (200-Yard Free, 2:00.83), Niebrugge (200-Yard Back, 2:14.80), Shannon Landers (100-Yard Breast, 1:09.72), Kimberly Rich (50-Yard Free, 25.47) and Melissa Merwin (200-Yard Breast, 2:32.77).
