Caroline Byron
Position:
Assistant Coach

Experience:
Second Season

Caroline Byron, a native to Dallas, Pennsylvania, is starting her second year as the assistant coach for the Boston College Men's & Women's Swimming Team. Caroline also serves as the Recruiting Coordinator for the program. She is a 2009 graduate of Boston College's Lynch School of Education with minors in Theology and Studio Art in Arts and Sciences. Caroline was one of Coach Tom Groden's most successful swimmers at the Heights. She was a four time letter winner. She still holds the Boston College records in the 100 and 200 freestyle. She is also part of four of the BC marks in relays - the 400 medley relay and all three freestyle relays (200, 400 & 800). Caroline is one of the very few swimmers to have set a BC record in each of her four seasons. She was twice chosen the MVP - the 2007 and 2009 season. She was a recipient of the Pawlak award for Special Recognition in 2008 and Groden Award for the Outstanding Performance of the Season in both 2006 & 2007. Caroline is the all-time leader at Boston College with 147 victories. Her 1607.75 points has her in fourth place on the list of BC's Career Scoring Leaders. She was a recipient of the ACC Post Graduate Scholarship in 2009 for her achievements in academics, athletics and service to the community.

Caroline was always driven to diversify her extracurricular pallet. In addition to her time spent in the water as an Eagle, Caroline thrived in other settings. She dressed as "Baldwin" the Eagle Mascot for three years at football and basketball games as well as visiting the local children's hospital. This was a great juxtaposition of a Boston College student's life: a mix of high competitive energy at games contrasted with the importance serving the community at the hospital. This has always been an important part of Caroline's life as a student and continues now as an employee at Boston College. She also volunteered at a school in Jamaica Plain, MA for children with behavioral disorders and visited several locations throughout college for community service trips - from Virginia to Jamaica.

After a brief stint at Northeastern University taking masters courses, Caroline is back as a Boston College student in the Mental Health Counseling Program part-time. She also coaches the Master's Swim Team and occasionally dips her toes back in the water to compete in local Master's meets. Last spring Caroline competed in a meet where she swam a relay that included both her sister, Liz and her mother, Joan.

Caroline's first season proved to be a positive and fulfilling learning experience. She enjoyed all aspects of coaching from practice, meets, recruiting and traveling. The dynamic of the men's and women's teams is thriving. Caroline is hoping to take all she learned her first season and is looking forward to a fast and competitive 2012 season.

Caroline's parents, Tom and Joan Byron are both practicing physicians in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Their support has directly impacted her ability to succeed from past to present. In addition to her parents, Caroline is lucky enough to live in the same city as her two older siblings, Tom, 29 and Liz, 27. Tom graduated from Dartmouth College in 2003 and is currently a lawyer by day and a creative writer by night. He has been published multiple times in various law reviews. Liz graduated from Boston College in 2006 and currently teaches in Boston. Caroline and Liz shared one year of competitive swimming together at Boston College. Liz set the stage for Caroline's BC experience and was herself a two-time MVP. Liz is the BC Record Holder in the 50 freestyle. They also share BC's 200 Freestyle Relay Record with teammates Torey Thelin and Libby Snyder. Liz was the number two graduate in her class in the Lynch School of Education. Liz won an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2006 for her achievements as a student-athlete at Boston College.
