Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
This Weekend: Boston College attempts to win its third BIG EAST Tournament title in four years as the Eagles host the conference championships for the first time since 1996 ... As the fourth seed, Boston College will play its opening game against BIG EAST regular-season champion Notre Dame at 11 a.m. Friday.
Against The Field: Boston College was one of just two teams to beat Notre Dame in conference play, splitting a doubleheader at Shea Field on April 15 ... The Eagles were swept by second-seeded Connecticut on April 28 in Storrs, and were also beaten twice at home by third-ranked Villanova on April 29.
In The BIG EAST Tournament: Boston College has a 12-12 all-time record in the BIG EAST Tournament, winning the conference title in 1997 and 1998 ...The Eagles were 1-2 in last year's championships.
Four For Finley?: Should the Eagles win this year's tournament, it would mark the fourth BIG EAST Tournament title for Boston College coach Jen Finley ... In addition to the 1997 and 1998 championships at BC, Finley also led Providence College to the 1994 BIG EAST Tournament crown.
Come On Over: The Eagles are hosting the BIG EAST Tournament for the fourth time ... Boston College has a 3-4 record in tournament games played in Chestnut Hill, including a 2-2 mark in 1991, when the Eagles reached the final game before losing to UConn ... Boston College was 1-2 in the 1990 tournament ... The Eagles also hosted the conference championships in 1996, but did not qualify.
KKKKKKKKKim: Freshman hurler Kimberly Ryan set a new BIG EAST single-season record for strikeouts, fanning 106 batters in 15 league appearances ... The old mark of 101 strikeouts was held by Boston College senior Mary Dietz, who set the record as a sophomore in 1998. Overall, Ryan has whiffed 191 batters in 177.1 innings pitched, posting a 1.83 ERA. She earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors twice this season.
Diaper Dandies: The Eagles have also gotten outstanding seasons from freshman infielders Jennifer Asbury and Cara Blumfield, who were among the team's top hitters all season ... After hitting around .350 for much of the season, Asbury finished the regular season with a team-high .318 average, while Blumfield comes into BIG EAST tournament play batting at a .284 clip ... Blumfield leads the Eagles with a .363 on-base percentage and 28 runs scored.
For The Record: In addition to Ryan's strikeout mark, the Eagles also set two other BIG EAST records this season ... Boston College committed just seven errors in league play this spring, posting a sparkling .984 fielding percentage to set a new single-season conference record ... In addition, senior Chris Vicari set the BIG EAST career home run mark when she cleared the wall in last Sunday's win over Rutgers ... The shot was the 11th of her BIG EAST career.
The Power: Looking beyond the home run mark, Vicari has been on a hitting tear of late ... In her last 12 games entering the BIG EAST Tournament, Vicari is batting .382 (13 for 34) with four doubles, five home runs, seven runs scored, and nine runs batted in ... She also has an .853 slugging percentage during that same dozen-game stretch ... Vicari led the BIG EAST in home runs, going deep five times in 16 league games.
Hard-Luck Season: While BC's 20-23 regular-season record may be a slight disappointment for a team that was among the BIG EAST preseason favorites, the Eagles have had more than their share of close calls ... Of Boston College's 23 losses, 10 have been by just one run, while three others have been by two runs ... The Eagles have three extra-inning losses this season -- at Hofstra on Mar. 19, at Fairfield on Mar. 26, and vs. Syracuse on Apr. 1.
At Shea Field: The Eagles have a 10-6 record at Shea Field this season after closing the regular-season home slate with a sweep of Rutgers on April 30 ... Boston College is 5-3 at home against BIG EAST competition this spring.
Control Freak: Senior Lauren Fischetti has exhibited outstanding control on the mound this season ... In 83.2 innings pitched, Fischetti has walked just eight batters this spring while registering 27 strikeouts.
