Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Sophomore Tory Speer and senior Brittany Wilkins were named to College Sports Madness ACC Softball Preseason All-Conference Team, the outlet announced.
Speer, the reigning ACC Freshman of the Year, earned first-team accolades while senior captain Wilkins was named to the second team. The left fielder was the first Eagle to garner the newcomer honors and she also took home ECAC All-Star accolades. With 11 home runs, she established the freshman home run record and recorded the fourth-most bombs in program history. Speer also ranked in the top three in six categories in conference play, including batting average (.400), slugging percentage (.492) and runs batted in (19).
Wilkins slugged 13 home runs in 2011, the second-most in BC history, and her .662 slugging percentage was fifth on the single-season list. The catcher also recorded 32 runs, good for fourth on the single-season list, and 92 total bases, which ranked sixth. She tied for the team lead with nine doubles and was second with a .317 batting clip last season.
Georgia Tech’s Kelsi Waseman was named Field Player of the Year while the Yellow Jackets’ coach, Sharon Perkins, earned Coach of the Year preseason honors. North Carolina’s Lori Spingola was voted Pitcher of the Year and Virginia Tech’s Lauren Gaskill earned Freshman of the Year honors.
