CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Head coach Jen Finley's softball team was chosen fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced today by the league. Each of the league's 11 head coaches submitted their votes and they could not vote for their own teams.

Defending BIG EAST champion Notre Dame was a unanimous first place choice, followed by Connecticut in second and Seton Hall and new league member Virginia Tech in a tie for third.

Sophomore pitcher Kimberly Ryan was chosen to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team. She was the only Eagles selected. Last season, the Bay Shore, N.Y. native set a BIG EAST single-season strikeout record (conference games only) on her way to sharing the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Award.

Last season, the team finished with a 20-25 record and advanced to the BIG EAST tournament which it hosted at Shea Field.

The Eagles open the 2001 softball season on Feb. 16 in the Sunshine State Tournament, hosted by Florida State, when they face the College of Charleston.
