Softball Falls to UMass, 3-2

AMHERST, MA-- Junior pitcher Danielle Henderson tossed a complete game with 12 strikeouts, to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 3-2 victory over Boston College in NCAA Softball Regional first round action Friday afternoon at Totman Field. Umass advances to the winners bracket semifinal to play the winner of Oklahoma/Harvard on Saturday, May 16, at noon. Boston College will play the loser of Oklahoma/Harvard on Saturday, May 16, at 2:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
The Minutewomen took control of the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Kim Gutridge led off the inning with a single to right field. With Katie Kenderski pinch-running for Gutridge, Kelly Buckley doubled to right advancing Kenderski to third with no outs. Becky George scored Kenderski with a sacrifice fly which also advanced Buckley to third base. Annie Smith completed the rally with a single to center, driving home Buckley. Umass extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Gutridge delivered a two-out RBI double, scoring Octavia Brown from third.
Boston College closed the gap with two runs in the top of the sixth. With two outs and runners on first and third, Gretchen Thompsons fly ball to left field was misplayed by Becky George, allowing Emily Desjardins and Summer Jarratt to score. BC threatened in the top of the seventh when Cristin Brown singles with one out, but Henderson struck out Julie Ulbrich and Buckley picked off Brown at first base to end the game.
Henderson, the nations leader in strikeouts this season, allowed the two unearned runs on five hits, while walking just one batter. Mary Dietz pitched the complete game for Boston College, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out nine and walking one.
