BC vs. Rutgers

NOTRE DAME, Ind.-- Boston College defeated Rutgers, 1-0, in the opening game of the BIG EAST Softball Championship at the University of Notre Dame's Ivy Field. The Eagles' victory was the 100th win at Boston College for head coach Jennifer Finley.

Freshman Jennifer Perrotta scored in the bottom of the fifth inning on sophomore Julie Ulbrich's single to give Boston College the only run of the game. Sophomore Mary Dietz pitched the complete-game shutout and recorded 12 strikeouts. Dietz's record improved to 15-5 with the win.

Boston College will play in the third game today against the winner of the contest between Connecticut and Notre Dame. One of the teams will be eliminated in the final game of the day featuring Rutgers and the team that loses the second game. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, beginning on May 15.

BC vs. UConn

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Boston College, the University of Connecticut, and Rutgers University advanced from the four-team, double-elimination field after the first day of play at the 1998 BIG EAST Softball Championship at the University of Notre Dame's Ivy Field. Notre Dame was eliminated after suffering losses to Connecticut and Rutgers.

The Eagles defeated Connecticut, 4-2, in their second game of the tournament. Sophomore Chris Vicari hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to give Boston College a second victory in the tournament. Sophomore Gretchen Thompson was 2-for-2 and scored one run for the Eagles.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Fischetti earned the win and Mary Dietz was credited with the save after retiring the final five Connecticut batters. The victory improved Boston College's record to 37-12-1, and established a new school record for wins in a season.

Connecticut and Rutgers will meet in game five on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Ivy Field. The winner of that game will play Boston College at Noon in game six. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, beginning on May 15.
