March 16, 2013
TAMPA, Fla. – The Boston College softball team got consecutive walk-off home runs from Tory Speer to sweep its day two doubleheader against Radford and LIU-Brooklyn on Saturday at the USF Clearwater Invitational.
In game one, Tory Speer’s solo homer in the bottom of the seventh propelled the Eagles to a 4-3 win over Radford. Chelsea Dimon (4-3) went the distance for BC – allowing just two earned runs on four hits over seven innings. Rachael Walters (4-5) allowed 10 hits and one earned run over six innings in the loss for the Highlanders.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the last of the fourth, the Eagles exploded for three runs off of Walters to take a 3-2 lead. Jessie Daulton’s RBI triple, Megan Cooley’s RBI single, and Alana DiMaso’s run-scoring double provided the damage for BC in the inning.
Radford knotted the game up in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch with two outs but Speer secured the victory for the Eagles on her solo shot (4th) to left field in the bottom of the inning.
In game two, Speer was the hero again – this time a three-run walk-off homer did the job as she broke open a 4-4 game and gave the Eagles their third consecutive win.
BC found itself trailing 3-0 after one but clawed their way back thanks to two homers by Alana Dimaso – her third and fourth homers of the season. Annie Sommers delivered a clutch RBI single in the fifth to knot the game at four apiece.
With one down in the last of the seventh, Speer blasted her second walk-off homer of the day to give the Eagles a dramatic 7-4 win over the Blackbirds.
Dimon (5-3) tallied her second win of the day – pitching a perfect 0.2 innings of relief for Stephanie Lord. Lord allowed seven hits and four earned runs over 6.1 innings while Cassie Vondrak took the loss for LIU.
