Tampa, Fla. -
The Boston College softball team defeated Miami (Ohio), 3-1, in its first game of the USF Under Armour Invitational on Friday. Junior pitcher Nicole D'Argento
turned in a complete game effort, striking out four batters, walked one and allowed one earned run, in addition to recording one RBI to lead the Eagles (9-2) past the RedHawks (7-3).
Simpson tossed six innings, struck out five, walked one batter and allowed two earned runs for Miami (Ohio).
The Eagles took a one run lead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning. An error at short enabled CJ Chirichigno to reach base, before another misstep at second on a grounder hit by Wilkins put two runners on. A fielder's choice got Wilkins at second, with the rookie moving to third and classmate Andrea Filler reaching first. When Filler stole second, Chirichigno swiped home for the first run of the day.
Boston College added two runs in the second, 3-0. Sophomore Tory Speer hit a leadoff single to left, before BC loaded the bases on a pair of hits by Alana DiMaso and Rene Delagrammaticas. D'Argento bunted to bring in Speer and get on base and Chirichigno drew a walk to force in a second run.
The RedHawks completed the scorecard with one run in the sixth, 3-1. Marshall hit a one-out single back at the pitcher, advanced to second on a ground out to short and came around when Larrabee singled up the middle.
