Charlotte, N.C. – Sophomore Tory Speer drove in three runs, going 2-for-4, and senior Ali Lynette-Krech added two RBI and a run scored in a 3-for-4 performance to led the Boston College softball team past Morgan State, 11-3, in five innings at the 49ers Invitational.
Junior Nicole D’Argento hit her second home run of the season, a three-run bomb in the second, and earned the save by entering the circle to strike out the Bears (0-6) for the final two outs of the game.
Freshman Chelsea Dimon earned her first collegiate victory. The Florence, N.J. native gave up four hits, walked four and allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings. The Eagles (8-1) tagged D. Lugo (0-2) for nine earned runs off 10 hits in four innings of work.
The Eagles opened with two runs in the first. After two quick outs, senior Brittany Wilkins was hit by a pitch to get a runner on. Freshman Andrea Filler double to center to put two in scoring position for BC, before Lynette-Krech singled to short to plate Wilkins. Filler then executed a squeeze and stole home for the second run.
Boston College commanded control with a five-run second inning, 7-0. Sophomore Chelsea LoBue drew a one out walk and advanced to second on Dimon’s single down the left field line. D’Argento entered the box and blasted her second homer of the year to put BC up, 5-0. Graduate Rene Delagrammaticas singles to second and took second on a wild pitch, before scoring on Wilkins’ double down the right field line. One batter later, Lynette-Krech stepped in and double to left center, plating her teammate who had moved up to second on an infield groundout.
BC tallied three more runs in the fourth for a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Meg Scanlon came into hit, but was beamed to reach safely. The Eagles found the bases loaded when Filler beat out of fielder’s choice and Lynette-Krech singled to short. Speer then singled to left to bring in two runs and LoBue doubled to center to score Lynette-Krech from second.
Morgan State shortened the gap with three runs in the fifth, 10-3. S. Smith drew a lead-off walk and moved around to third following D. Brown’s single to center and a ground out to third. L. Rodriguez then singled to drive in a run and took second when the centerfielder tried to throw home, enabling Brown to come in for a second run. The Bear got hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners and singled through the left side for the their third run.
The Eagles ended the game with one run in the bottom half of the inning, 11-3. Wilkins singled to right, but was out at second due to a fielder’s choice from Filler. After BC struck out, Speer knocked a single to right center and Filler hustled around for the winning run.
Boston College will play in the championship game of the 49ers Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
