The Boston College softball team lost in a heartbreaker on Thursday afternoon as its comeback attempt came up just one run short in a 6-5 loss to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in front of 190 fans at Chapman Field in Corpus Christi, Tx.

The win improves the Islanders to 4-3 for the season, while the loss drops Boston College to 0-1 on the year.

Freshman Nicole D'Argento led off the game with a single to give her the first hit of the 2010 season for the Eagles, and it was also the first hit of her collegiate career.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as it scored two unearned runs off Boston College starter Taylor Peyton on three hits and an error to take a early 2-0 lead.

Boston College tied the game in the top of fourth inning as both runs were scored with two outs in the inning. Senior captain Amy Tunstall got the Eagles started as she doubled to left field with two outs in the inning. Sophomore Brittany Wilkins knocked Tunstall in with a double of her own to make the score 2-1. Wilkins moved to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Blair Destito single to right field to tie the game at 2-2.

Peyton, and the Eagles, couldn't keep the game tied for long as Texas A&M Corpus Christi put together back-to-back hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

The Islanders forced Peyton out of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored two more runs to make the score 5-2. Peyton went four and a third innings on the day giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits. She struck out two, and walked three in the outing.

The Eagles trailed 6-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but they wouldn't go down without a fight. Peyton walked, junior Gemma Ypparila singled to right and junior Alison Kooistra singled through the right side to load the bases for BC with one out.

D'Argento hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field driving in Peyton to make the score 6-4. That left the Eagles with runners on second and third with two outs.

Junior Rene Delagrammaticas looked like she had tied the game for the Eagles with a single to shortstop but Kooistra got thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Boston College will be back in action in the Texas A&M Corpus Christi tournament tomorrow as they will take on Centenary College at 11 a.m.
