Boston College (12-5-2) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 6-1 win over Marist last Sunday. The Eagles will now play California, which defeated Santa Clara on penalty kicks in the first round.

This is not the first time BC has been sent west to play in the tournament. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament, Boston College hosted into the Sweet 16 and defeated Harvard, UConn and Wisconsin. The Eagles were then sent west to play Stanford on the Cardinal home turf. BC lost 3-1 in its fi rst Elite Eight appearance.

Boston College cruised to a 6-1 win over Marist in fi rst round action of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Eagles were led by Gibby Wagner (two goals), Victoria DiMartino (one goal, one assist) and Stephanie McCaffrey (one goal, one assist). The other goals were scored by Kristen Mewis and Julia Bouchelle. Senior goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni picked up the win, her 61st career victory.

• This is BC's record 9th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

• This is the fourth consecutive season BC has advanced to the second round of the tournament. Since Alison Foley took over in 1997, the Eagles have advanced to the second round eight times and into the third round seven times.

• The Eagles are 3-3-1 vs. Pac-10 teams.

• BC has met Stanford the most, four times since the 2008 season. The two teams have met twice in the regular season with Stanford earning a 3-0 win in 2008. In 2010 the match ended in a 1-1 tie in doubleovertime. The last meeting came in the 2010 College Cup and BC lost, 2-0, in Cary, NC.

• This will be the fi rst match between BC and Cal in women's soccer.

• The two teams have no common opponents this season, though BC did lose to Stanford in the 2010 College Cup. Cal lost to Stanford this season, 2-0.
