W. Soccer Picked Third in ACC Preseason Coaches' Poll
Aug. 12, 2011
Greensboro, N.C. -The 2011 Boston College Women's Soccer team was picked to finish third in the ACC by the 11 conference coaches in a preseason poll, according to an announcement by the ACC office today.
Boston College was recently ranked fourth in the 2011 NSCAA preseason poll. The ACC saw a total of five teams listed among the top 10 - North Carolina (3), Florida State (5), Maryland (6) and Virginia (10).
The Eagles return eight starters and from the 2010 squad that went 17-7-1 (5-5-0 ACC), advanced to its first NCAA College Cup and finished third in the NSCAA Poll - its highest-ever final standing. Seven freshmen will join BC in its quest to capture the ACC title and make its ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The 2011 lineup features six seniors - goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni, defender Alyssa Pember, forwards Alaina Beyar and Stephanie Wirth, as well as midfielders Julia Bouchelle and Marissa Mello - who have amassed a 50-17-5 record, earned three NCAA postseason berths and claimed a share of the 2009 ACC Regular Season Championship.
Mastroianni and Pember anchor a defense that allowed less than one goal per contest and tallied 10 shutouts during 2010. Mastroianni needs just one win to set BC's all-time victory record and is five shutouts shy of breaking the program mark for blanking opponents.
Leading goal scorers, forward Victoria DiMartino and midfielder Kristen Mewis are back for their junior campaigns. Last year, the highly decorated Eagles charged the BC offense with 14 goals, eight assists (36 points) and 10 goals, 14 assists (34 points), respectively.
Boston College will scrimmage Connecticut on Sunday, August 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Newton Soccer Complex, before hosting the season opener against BU on Friday, August 19 at 4:00 p.m. To view the complete 2011 schedule, please click here.
