No. 13/17 Women's Soccer Beats NC State, 1-0
Oct. 23, 2011
Newton, MA -
Senior Stephanie Wirth scored the only goal in the game to lead No. 13 Boston College past ACC foe NC State, 1-0, at the Newton Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. BC is now 10-4-2 overall and 5-4-0 in the conference, while NC State dropped to 10-7-2 and 1-6-2 overall.
The goal was Wirth's third of the season and her first game-winner. She led the team on offense with five shots, three on goal. Kristen Mewis started the offense on the goal with a beautiful cross to Gibby Wagner. Wagner found Wirth who one-timed it from five yards out into the far corner for the 1-0 lead just 15 minutes into the game.
BC freshman Rachel Davitt had a great chance from inside the box but NC State goalkeeper Kim Kern made a one- handed diving save to keep the game a one goal deficit with 10 minutes to play in the first half. Kern kept NC State in the game as she also stopped a penalty kick from Victoria DiMartino in the 52nd minute of the match.
Six minutes later Wagner broke in off a though ball from Mewis. Wagner tired to slip it to the near post but Kern was there to make the stop for NC State. Wirth had a great with five minutes to play when she broke behind the defense off a great pass from Julia Bouchelle (two shots in the match). Wirth had a defender on her side and tried to chip the ball over Kern who was out of the goal. Kern came out beyond the 18-yard box to cut down the angle on shot. Kern tipped the shot just wide of the goal.
The Eagles had a 17-9 edge in shots, while they also had nine corner kicks to NC State's two.
Senior Jillian Mastroianni had two saves in her ninth shutout of the season. It was her 42nd career shutout and 59th career victory in goal for the Eagles.
