CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Several members of the Boston College women's rowing team earned honors for both their academic and athletic efforts during 2012-13 at the All-Sports Banquet and the BC Rowing Banquet earlier this month.
At May 5's All-Sports Banquet, the team captured the Devlin S-AFE Ignatius Cup for the fourth time in the last five years. The cup is "presented annually to the teams whose spirit and actions best exemplify the Jesuit principle of men and women for others and overall excellence."
The Eagles also garnered awards on an individual level at the banquet. Sophomore Alicia McKean gained the Academic Advisors' Award for Achievement given to the female student-athlete with the highest GPA. Fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Votta won a Boston College Leadership Award given to a player on each team "who best exemplifies the pursuit of excellence as a role model for other students" while senior Erica Jennings received an Outstanding Senior Award.
The team placed 40 student-athletes (listed below) as recipients of the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average.
At BC's year-end Rowing Banquet, the team's coaches distributed four individual awards. Sophomore Ellen Burr earned Rower of the Year accolades as the team's best overall contributor with criteria including "athletic ability, boat moving skills, attitude, leadership, and teamwork." Freshman Megan Carney gained Novice of the Year honors, McKean garnered Most Improved laurels, and junior Karen Shu captured the Ignatian Award given "to the athlete who is an outstanding leader on the team in terms of community and off-the-water involvement in service."
