Cannady rowed at Santa Clara University (1996-2000) were he was an Engineering Physics major with an emphasis in Aerospace Science. As a member of the novice crew during his freshman year, Cannady rowed to a first-place finish at the Newport Regatta and earned the title of "Most Improved Rower". In his senior year, Cannady placed third at the Pac-10 Championships.
Upon graduation, he spent one year as an engineer in Silicon Valley, before becoming a physics teacher and assistant rowing coach at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, Calif. Cannady held the position of assistant coach for two years (2001-2003) before being named the crew's head coach. During his three-year career as head coach (2003-2006) at St. Ignatius College Preparatory, Cannady guided the team from tenth in the region to third.
After five years of preparatory school coaching, Cannady moved to Boston to start graduate work in Educational Research, Measurement and Evaluation at Boston College's Lynch School of Education, where he is currently pursuing a PhD.
