Junior Shannon Smith earned All-America honors after placing sixth in the 3000 meter event at the 2000 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Durham, N.C. on Saturday, June 3.
After placing third in her preliminary heat in a time of 9:27.21, Smith advanced to the event's final. In that race, she trimmed nearly 10 seconds off her earlier time, finishing sixth in 9:17.89.
Her 9:17.89 is the second-fastest 3000 time in Boston College history. Her previous best was 9:18.66, set at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. in April 2000. Angie Graham '98 holds the school record of 9:14.39.
Smith is the first Eagle to capture outdoor All-America honors since Graham in 1998 (1500 meters).
