CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The women's indoor track and field team downed Harvard, 64-63, Saturday afternoon at Gordon Tack and Tennis Center, the first time the Eagles defeated the Crimson in 12 years. The men got doubled up, 96-48.
The women's win was highlighted by some excellent individual performances. Foremost among them was that of freshman Jessica Fazekas (Closter, N.J.), who, in winning the shot put, broke the Boston College record in the event by more than a foot. Her mark of 43-1/2 shattered Paige MacTavish's standard of 41-11, set in 1994.
Sophomore Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill./York) hit an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter run with her winning time of 9:31.85.
Three other field athletes set personal indoor bests en route to first-place finishes: junior Julie Heyde (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) in the high jump (5-4 ½), sophomore Megan Mara (Avon, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) in the pole vault (10-11 ¾) and sophomore Anne Marie Walsh (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) in the triple jump (36-8 ½).
In her first action since last spring, senior Megan Guiney (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) won the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:59.97.
The men's top performers were sophomores Geoff Atkins (Avon, Conn./Avon), who won the 400 in 49.71, and Anthony Monteiro (Brockton, Mass./Brockton), who bested the competition in the 500, coming in at 1:06.52. Both times were career bests.
Senior Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) breezed to victory in the 800 with a 1:55.80 clocking.
Both teams return to action Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
