Feb. 18, 2014
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior midfielder Mikaela Rix and senior defender Kate McCarthy have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Rix totaled a career-high seven points on six goals and one assist in the Eagles season-opening 15-10 victory at No. 11 Notre Dame. The Garden City, N.Y., native scored four of her six goals in the second half, including two during a 4-0 Boston College run that sealed the win for the Eagles.
She also contributed a ground ball, two draw controls, and a caused turnover in the game.
McCarthy led the Boston College defense with four draw controls and four groundballs, while pulling the assignment of defending Notre Dame's leading scorer Courtney Fortunato. McCarthy held Fortunato, who recorded seven points in ND's win over Cincinnati on Feb. 12, to one goal on three shots.
The Longmeadow, Mass., product also played a key role in transition for the Eagles, coming up with loose balls and successfully clearing the ball into BC's offensive end.
Rix, McCarthy, and the Eagles continue action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 as they host New Hampshire in their home opener at 4 p.m.
