Lacrosse Falls to Dartmouth, 11-8, in NCAA First Round

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore Covie Stanwick scored a game-high five goals, but Boston College fell to Dartmouth, 11-8, in the first round of the NCAA Championship at SU Soccer Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Big Green (11-7) advance to play host and No. 4-seed Syracuse on Sunday at 3 p.m. while the season ends for the Eagles (12-8) in their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Stanwick scored five or more goals in a game for the fourth time this season. Junior Moira Barry, sophomore Mikaela Rix, and freshman Sarah Mannelly each scored a goal, and freshman Kate Rich posted an assist.
After Dartmouth scored the game's opening goal, Barry put the Eagles on the board, collecting a rebound and firing a shot past the goalie just under three minutes into the contest. Stanwick gave BC a 2-1 lead, connecting on a free position shot with 19:57 left in the half. The Big Green then went on a 4-0 run to gain a 5-2 edge with 13:41 to play in the opening period.
Rix stopped the run with a goal off an eight-meter shot, but Dartmouth responded with two more goals to stake a 7-3 advantage with just over five minutes left in the half. The Eagles scored the half's last two goals to pull within 7-5 at the break. Mannelly scored the first goal attacking from straight on before Stanwick wrapped around the crease to her left for her second goal of the game.
The Big Green tallied the second half's first two goals, but the Eagles answered with two goals of their own to pull within 9-7 with 22:08 to play. Stanwick scored both goals, her third and fourth of the game. She scored the first wrapping around the goal to her right and made the second after receiving a pass in front of the net from Rich.
Dartmouth scored twice more before Stanwick scored her fifth goal of the game, second off a free position shot, to bring BC within 11-8 with 12:56 remaining. Neither of the teams scored for the duration of the game.
