Charlottesville, Va. - Fourth-ranked Virginia held Boston College to its lowest goal total of the season as the Eagles fell to the Cavaliers, 12-4. Three Cavs recorded hat tricks while four different Eagles scored goals in the loss. Junior goalie Katie Monaghan made 14 saves, a new season high. The Eagles dropped to 3-7 on the season, 2-2 in the ACC while the Cavs got their 10th win (10-2) and their fourth conference victory (4-1).
Virginia scored the first four goals of the game, netting three of them in the first six minutes. The Eagles got on the board when sophomore Lauren Costello found junior Lauren Fitzpatrick in front of the net with 4:55 to play in the first half. Fitzpatrick scored her 20th goal of the season and extended her scoring streak to 10 games.
The Cavaliers recorded two more scores before the end of the first stanza, including a goal by Jenny Hauser with nine seconds remaining. Hauser scored the final three goals of the half for UVA.
UVA added two more goals to its lead in less than four minutes into the second half. The Eagles nailed their second goal of the game with 26:25 to play when sophomore Sarah Sedgwick scored quickly off a draw control.
Down 9-2, senior captain Shauna Culhane tried to bring the Eagles closer, but nailed the post instead of the back of the net. Blair Weymouth recovered the loose ball and took off down the field. Monaghan saved the initial one-on-one shot by Weymouth but the Cavalier picked her own rebound out of the air and slipped it past Monaghan for the 10th Virginia goal.
Junior Maura Mahoney scored the third BC goal with 8:29 left when Costello was awarded a free position shot. Instead of the shooting the ball herself, Costello dished to Mahoney, who put in her 12th goal of the season.
For the first time in the game, the Eagles scored two goals in a row, as junior captain Jenna McCabe extended her 10-game scoring streak with her 25th goal of the year. McCabe eluded two defenders, spun and fired past McBrearty with 6:23 to play.
Hauser scored her fourth goal of the game with 4:20 remaining to seal the 12-4 victory for the Cavaliers. UVA outshot BC, 41-22, and picked up 18 ground balls to the Eagles' 11. BC only cleared 10 of their 19 chances, while the Cavs converted all nine attempts. Mahoney led the way with four draw controls of the Eagles' seven total. Virginia controlled 11 draws.
