NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman Sarah Mannelly scored four goals to lead No. 20/18 Boston College past Vanderbilt in its home opener, 13-8, at the Newton Lacrosse Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Mannelly paced the Eagles (2-0, 0-0 ACC) with five points while sophomore Covie Stanwick recorded three goals, and senior Brooke Blue and sophomore Mikaela Rix each scored twice.
Mallory Schonk led the Commodores (1-3, 0-0 ALC) with four goals.
Rix opened the game's scoring with a goal just under three minutes into the contest before Vanderbilt responded with two goals within 40 seconds to stake a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles answered with six straight goals from the 20:19 mark to the 2:30 mark in the opening half to take a 7-2 edge. Five different BC players scored during the streak. Blue scored the run's first goal before assisting on a Stanwick finish. Kate Rich then converted off a feed from Moira Barry, and tallies from Rix, Mannelly, and Stanwick closed the run.
Schonk scored for Vanderbilt with 1:54 to go in the half to trim BC's lead to 7-3 heading into the break.
Stanwick, Mannelly, and Blue scored BC's first three goals of the second half as the Eagles maintained a 10-6 advantage with 17:21 remaining. After Schonk scored again for the Commodores, Mannelly scored twice - including once on a spin move - within a 40-second period to push BC's lead to 12-7 with 12:08 left.
Barry scored BC's last goal off an assist from Mannelly with 5:46 to play to cap a 3-0 run for the Eagles, and Schonk registered her last tally with 4:03 left for the final margin.
Boston College returns to play at Ohio State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
