Lacrosse Wins Season Opener over Notre Dame, 15-10

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior Mikaela Rix set career highs with six goals and seven points to lead the Boston College lacrosse team past Notre Dame, 15-10, in its season opener at the Loftus Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Sarah Mannelly recorded four goals in the season debut while classmate Caroline Margolis notched two goals. Moira Barry, Brooke Blue, and Covie Stanwick each registered a goal of their own for the Eagles (1-0, 1-0 ACC).
Caitlin Gargan led the Irish (1-1, 0-1 ACC) with four goals.
Junior Emily Mata made two saves while Notre Dame’s Allie Murray made five saves and Liz Sullivan made two saves.
Boston College started off the scoring on a free position shot from Margolis to take an early 1-0 lead. Gargan then notched back-to-back unassisted goals and Stephanie Toy scored on a free position shot to give Notre Dame a 3-1 advantage with 21:49 remaining in the first.
Mannelly immediately answered back with two unassisted goals to tie the game, 3-3, with 19:51 on the clock. Scoring went back and forth throughout the half and Mannelly came through with her third goal of the game to tie it up, 7-7, heading into the locker room.
Rix and Margolis each scored early in the second half to push BC’s lead to 9-7 with 26:55 to play. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way, but Rix scored with less than 10 minutes to play to spark a 4-0 Eagles run to close the game. Rix scored twice during the streak while Mannelly and Stanwick each notched a goal of their own in the run.
The Eagles dedicated their first game to the Meehan family who lost their father this past week.
Next, Boston College hosts New Hampshire in its home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.
