Carpenter Named Rookie of the Week
Oct. 11, 2011
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College women's ice hockey freshman Alex Carpenter was named the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Week. The conference announcement came one day after the rookie center recorded three points in a 3-2 comeback win over No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth to help BC split the season-opening series on the road.
Down by two goals, Carpenter, a native of Reading, Mass., earned her first collegiate point when junior Dru Burns collected a faceoff her teammate won in the neutral zone and passed the puck to freshman Emily Field, who sounded the horn for a short-handed goal. The second came on a similar situation in the offensive zone, with classmate Emily Pfalzer recording the equalizing strike.
Late in the third, BC was charged with killing a penalty to close out regulation, but Carpenter gathered a pass on the flop and beat the UMD goaltender over the shoulder with 0.4 ticks of the clock remaining for her first goal in the Maroon and Gold.
The goal provided Boston College with its first win over Minnesota-Duluth in program history and marked the first time since 2008 that three freshmen scored for the Eagles in the same game.
Only current sophomore Taylor Wasylk's five points (2g, 3a) during last year's opening weekend, rates higher for an Eagles rookie in their first weekend of collegiate play.
The win helped Boston College remain at No. 5 in the USCHO poll, while Duluth improved to No. 6.
The Eagles open Hockey East play on Friday, Oct. 14 with a trip to New Hampshire at 7 p.m. Boston College will then host its first home game of the season at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, also against UNH.
