Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College women's ice hockey 2012 NLI signee and USA Hockey defender Kaliya Johnson has been named a finalist for the 81st Sullivan Award, presented annually to the nation's most outstanding amateur athlete.
The award, which has been bestowed since 1930, is based on character, leadership and sportsmanship. Voting for the accolade will end on Friday, March 9, with the winner being announced on Tuesday, March 20 in the New York.
Originally from Chandler, Ariz. Johnson earned a silver medal at the U18 IIHF World Championship this past January. The defenseman also netted her first international goal in her debut game for the USA Select Team in August of 2011. Johnson, who likes to inspire elementary students' dream and challenge them to set goals when not manning the blue line, was the winner of the prestigious "Dare to Dream...Expect to Succeed" national scholarship.
