#2 Women's Hockey Battles Northeastern for Beanpot Crown
Feb. 11, 2013
Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The #2 women’s hockey team (21-4-2, 13-2-1 WHEA), fresh off their dramatic 2-1 Beanpot victory over Harvard, will take on Hockey East rival Northeastern for the Beanpot crown on Tuesday.
BC enters the contest in search for their fifth Beanpot title in program history and look to improve on their 4-14 Beanpot record against the Huskies. Northeastern advanced to the finals of last season’s Beanpot with a shootout win over the Eagles on Jan. 31 after the team’s played a 65-minute, 1-1 deadlock.
The Eagles have bested the Huskies in all three meetings this season by a combined score of 16-9 including BC’s 6-2 win at Matthews Arena on Jan. 9 in their last meeting. Freshman Haley Skarupa has led the way in the series this season, tallying two goals and six assists combined over three games.
On Tuesday, the Eagles rallied from a one goal deficit in the third period to edge #5 Harvard in the first round of the Beanpot. Freshman Dana Trivigno and junior Taylor Wasylk tallied the goals for the Eagles while Corinne Boyles made a season high 40 saves to preserve the win.
The Huskies (15-10-2, 8-7-1 WHEA) enter the game off a 4-1 upset win over #3 Boston University on Tuesday. Kendall Coyne netted a hat trick for Northeastern as they look to defend their Beanpot crown from a season ago and win their 16th championship in 35 years.
BC will face off against UConn this weekend in a home-and-home series on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game at Kelley Rink will honor all seven seniors in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 2 p.m.
