Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Boston College junior Corinne Boyles was named WHEA Goaltender of the Month for December and freshman center Alex Carpenter picked up the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month distinction in a conference announcement on Tuesday. This is the second monthly award this season for both of the Eagles. Each received similar honors, Boyles in November and Carpenter in October.
Boyles went 3-1-0 in the month with a 1.95 GAA and a .933 save percentage. The Wheaton, Ill. native made 39 saves and picked up her third shutout in a series sweep of Maine on the road. The net-minder returned to the Heights where she delivered a .936 save percentage (73-for-78) in two games against sixth-ranked Mercyhurst. Boyles made a season-high 42 saves, including 21 in the third period, to help the Eagles defeat the Lakers, 4-2, for the first time since 2001 and establish a program mark for wins (13) before the winter break. The junior denied 30 shots by the nation’s second ranked offense the next day, in a 2-3 overtime loss, her fifth 30-save game of the year.
Carpenter notched five points (3g, 2a) in four games, helping the Eagles to a 3-1-0 mark last month. The North Reading, Mass. product secured two points (1g, 1a) in the 4-3 overtime win at Maine, before having her seven-game point streak snapped in a 1-0 win. The center then registered three points in two games against Mercyhurst. Late in the first meeting, the freshman stick handled through the Lakers’ defense to seal a 4-2 win with an empty netter, marking the first win for Boston College over Mercyhurst in 10 years. The following day, she gave the Eagles an early lead by going top shelf against NCAA wins record holder Hilary Pattenden and later assisted the equalizer that sent the game into overtime, marking her sixth multi-point game of the season.
This is just the second instance in program history that two players have been recognized as Hockey East Players of the Month at the same time. On Feb. 2, 2007, Kelli Stack
was named Player of the Month and Allie Thunstrom
was called on as Rookie of the Month.
Boston College opens the 2012 calendar year versus St. Lawrence on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. at Mathews Arena. Fans are invited to keep up with live stats available through bceagles.com.
