Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Freshman forward Haley Skarupa recorded her first career hat trick and tallied five points total as the No. 5/6 Eagles (9-3-2, 6-2-1 WHEA) defeated Maine 7-2 on Friday night.
Corinne Boyles made eight saves to improve to 7-1-0 this season while Brittany Ott made 39 saves for the Black Bears to drop to 2-4-1 on the season.
Despite a 19-4 advantage in shots in the first period, the Eagles found themselves trailing early as Maine’s Brittany Dougherty stuffed a shot past Boyles at the 5:34 mark. Melissa Bizzari, Emily Field, and Taylor Wasylk led the way for the Eagles in shots with three apiece in the opening frame. Alex Carpenter (12) extended her point streak to 12 games with the tying goal at 17:36 off a feed from Haley Skarupa. Brittany Ott kept the Black Bears in it by stopping 18 of 19 shots she faced in the first 20 minutes.
Kate Leary (5) got the Eagles off and running to start the second as she beat Brittany Ott at 2:25 on a feed from Taylor Wasylk. With Maine’s Audra Richards sent off for hooking, freshman Haley Skarupa (9) went coast-to-coast past the Black Bears defense and tucked a shot past Ott’s outstretched pad to put BC up 3-1 at 11:13. The Eagles continued their assault on the Maine goal as they put 22 shots on net in the middle frame. Maine cut the BC lead to 3-2 late in the second on a power play goal by Jennifer More.
BC dashed all hopes of a Black Bears comeback with four goals in the final stanza. Wasylk (4) scored off a turnover at 1:31 and Skarupa (10) scored just over a minute later to put BC up 5-2. Skarupa added her third of the night at 8:55 off a rebound into an open net while Blake Bolden’s (3) blast from the point on the power play at 13:52 concluded the scoring.
