BOSTON, Mass. -
A hat trick from Kelli Stack and one a piece from Ashley Motherwell, Taylor Wasylk, and Danielle Welch secured a 6-3 win for the No. 6 Boston College women's hockey team over No. 5 Boston University on Saturday, November 20 at BU's Walter Brown Arena.
BC improves to 8-1-4 while BU falls to 8-2-3.
BU came out firing to begin the first period, but Molly Schaus started strong back in net for the Eagles, sliding between the pipes to save two shots from either side in the first minute of play.
When the Eagles finally gained possession and made a break for the Terriers' goal, they made it count. At 3:42, Stack slapped a shot in from the right side, assisted by Jess Martino and Mary Restuccia.
Thirty seconds later, Motherwell collected on a rebound and scored at 4:12 with assists from Restuccia and Dru Burns to turn up the heat on BU with a two goal lead.
With less than two minutes left in the first frame, Welch drew BC's first penalty and took a seat in the box for bodychecking. BC's starters returned to the ice for a critical power play opportunity for BU and rather than allow the Terriers to get on the board, Stack scored with 1:12 remaining for her second shorthanded goal of the season.
BC came out in the second frame in the same fashion as the first, scoring a goal at 1:32 to increase the Eagles' lead to 4-0. After a flurry of shots in front of the net in which Restuccia and Motherwell's shot were saved, Taylor Wasylk collected from the right side and fired it behind BU's goaltender Alissa Fromkin.
Even after a BU goalie change, Stack was able to net her third goal of the game at 5:36 to give BC a 5-0 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the second period. Welch and Melissa Bizzari assisted on the goal.
The Terriers scored their first goal at 15:23 in the second after Marie-Philip Poulin was able to make a charge at goal right out of the penalty box. They netted a second score with 11 minutes remaining and a third with eight to go in the third period.
Despite BU's final frame surge, BC's defense was able to hold the line and at 17:16, Welch scored BC's final goal with an assist from Katelyn Kurth to end the game 6-3.
Schaus made 24 saves, while BC outshot BU 39-27.
The Eagles will be back in action against the Terriers tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
at Kelley Rink.
