#2 Women's Hockey and Vermont Battle to 1-1 Tie

Feb. 23, 2013

Box Score

BURLINGTON, Vt.  – The #2 women’s hockey team had its chances at Gutterson Fieldhouse but UVM goaltender Roxanne Douville frustrated the Eagles as the teams fought to a 1-1 tie on Saturday.

Alex Carpenter tallied the equalizer with just 3:45 remaining to force overtime but BC couldn’t buy the overtime winner as they outshot UVM 6-0 in the extra period.

Corinne Boyles made 16 saves as she improves to 19-3-1 this year while Douville made 53 saves to improve to 5-14-4.

The teams battled through a scoreless first period as the Catamounts did a good job of limiting the quality of the Eagles’ scoring chances.  BC’s best bid of the period came off the stick of Haley Skarupa as she walked through the Vermont defense and sent a backhander from her knees on goal that Douville turned aside.

Douville remained strong the second period as BC outshot the Catamounts 19-4 in the middle stanza. Alex Carpenter had the best chance of the period for BC but her backhander rang the post midway through the period. The Eagles weren’t able to convert on their three power play opportunities as the teams went into the locker room still scoreless after 40 minutes.

With Meagan Mangene in the box early in the third period, the Eagles thought they scored their second shorthanded goals in as many games but Douville slid post to post to rob Skarupa on a 2-on-1. UVM took the lead at 14:31 on a goal by Emily Walsh but BC answered back under two minutes later.

Alex Carpenter (31st) answered on the power play with 3:45 remaining as she hammered home a loose puck at the side of the net past Douville.  The teams battled through the rest of regulation and overtime with BC nearly winning it at the buzzer in OT but Vermont’s Dayna Colang rescued the puck off the goal line with just 0.7 seconds remaining.

BC will now need a win tomorrow and at least one loss or tie from BU this weekend to clinch at least a share of the Hockey East regular season title.
