BOSTON – The #2 women’s hockey team notched the equalizer in the third period but Northeastern responded with just under 10 minutes to play to hang on to a 4-3 victory over the Eagles on Tuesday night in the Beanpot finals.
Emily Field notched the tying goal in the third and recorded an assist while Corinne Boyles stopped 37 Huskies shots as she fell to 17-3-0 this season. Chloe Desjardins turned aside 36 BC shots to improve to 14-8-2.
After a defensive battle last week against Harvard, the Eagles wasted no time getting on the board Tuesday night. Freshman Dana Trivigno’s second career Beanpot goal at 1:18 deflected off of two Huskies and trickled behind Desjardins to give BC a 1-0 lead.
Boyles held strong on Northeastern’s lone power play of the period as she stopped Huskies star Kendall Coyne on two point blank chances.
BC nearly cashed in late in the period but Emily Field wasn’t able to corral Trivigno’s centering feed as the Eagles went into the locker room up 1-0. Shots on goal after 20 minutes of play were 15-11 in favor of BC.
Brittany Esposito knotted the game on a power play at 8:06 and that set off a flurry of goals.
Melissa Bizzari’s 13th goal of the season gave the Eagles a brief lead as her one-timer knuckled over the shoulder of Desjardins at 14:53. The Huskies responded with two quick goals late in the period as Casey Pickett tied the game with a backhander and Paige Savage gave NU their first lead of the game on a wrister at 18:33.
Northeastern recorded 10 shots on the power play in the second period as they took a 3-2 lead into the locker room.
BC kept storming the Huskies goal in the third and it finally paid off on Emily Field’s brilliant individual rush after Boyles robbed Pickett on a breakaway. Field’s backhand beat Desjardins at 9:01 but the deadlock didn’t last long.
Katie MacSorley’s fluttering shot from the point found its way past Boyles just 1:19 later to give the Huskies at 4-3 lead.
The Eagles feverishly tried to tie the game but Desjardins and the Huskies closed to door to take home their 16th Beanpot title.
