Jan. 18, 2013
Erie, Pa. – Alex Carpenter’s three points led the way as the #2/3 Eagles (17-3-2, 10-2-1 WHEA) lead wire-to-wire for a 5-1 victory over #8/7 Mercyhurst on Friday night. Carpenter set the BC record for most consecutive games with a point as she extended her streak to 20 games.
Corinne Boyles won her 15th straight decision while stopping 17 shots to improve to 15-1-0 this season. Amanda Makela made 34 saves for the Lakers as she fell to 7-3-1 on the season.
The teams had a defensive struggle for the first 10 minutes of the game as neither team could generate much offense despite three power play chances. The Eagles began to get their legs and put Mercyhurst on their heels with a tenacious forecheck as they outshot the Lakers 14-3 in the first stanza. At 13:45, Alex Carpenter (17) slammed home a rebound off of a Kaliya Johnson point shot to put BC up 1-0. The Eagles kept storming the Mercyhurst zone and thought they had a two goal cushion but Taylor Wasylk’s backhand deke was robbed by Lakers netminder Amanda Makela.
Carpenter struck again just 37 seconds in the second period when she deflected a Dru Burns shot from the point by past Makela to give BC a 2-0 lead. Emily Field (9) one-timed a tremendous feed from Lexi Bender at the 12:45 mark to give the Eagles a three goal cushion. Mercyhurst answered back on the power play as Jenna Dingeldein wristed a shot over Boyles’ shoulder to cut the deficit to 3-1. Shots on goal through 40 minutes of play were 25-11 in favor of BC.
The Eagles continued their stay in the Lakers’ zone as they held a 14-7 edge in shots in the third period. Ashley Motherwell added her seventh and eighth goals of the season in the third period on a blast from the left circle at 13:59 and a empty net tally at 18:18 to conclude the scoring.
Notes: Alex Carpenter extended her point streak to a record breaking 20-games (18-22-40) … BC has not lost since dropping a 3-2 decision to Minnesota-Duluth on October 25th … Skarupa and Carpenter are now +36 and +32 respectively this season … the Eagles extend their unbeaten streak to 18 games (16-0-2) and their winning streak to 13 games, which are good for the longest streaks in team history … Skarupa extends her point streak to nine games (12-10-22) … Power Plays: Eagles 1-4, Lakers 1-8 … final shots on goal were 39-18 in favor of BC.
