Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The 17th-ranked Boston College field hockey team opens the 2012 season at home on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. against instate-rival Massachusetts (2-1). With three road wins under their belts, the Eagles look to improve their record in the friendly confides of the Newton Campus Complex.
The Eagles have tallied two early-season shutouts of Michigan State and Quinnipiac and defeated 22nd-ranked Maine, 4-1. The Minutewomen recorded two 2-1 overtime victories over No. 15 Ohio State and No. 18 New Hampshire, but fell in their home opener to Dartmouth on Friday.
UMass leads the series with BC, 14-8, but the Eagles took the game last year with a 5-0 victory. Current junior Chapin Duke notched two goals in the contest, while senior captain Jacqui Moorfield and sophomore Maura Keith scored one apiece.
Junior Virgynia Muma leads the team with six points on three goals in the young season. Freshman goalie Leah Settipane has tallied two shutouts and recorded 10 saves in the win over Quinnipiac. Boston College is 51-32 on the Newton Campus field since it opened for the 2005 season.
